La cultura digital contemporánea ha acelerado el ritmo de innovación tecnológica, generando un ciclo de consumo vertiginoso. Cada año, millones de dispositivos son lanzados con actualizaciones mínimas pero envueltos en campañas de marketing que apelan al deseo de novedad. Este proceso no ocurre al margen de la educación, sino que la atraviesa profundamente: escuelas digitalizadas, currículos que promueven el uso de plataformas privadas, y una visión instrumental de la tecnología refuerzan la lógica de “usar y reemplazar”.
Frente a esta realidad, el presente artículo propone una mirada crítica y educativa que ayude a desnaturalizar estas dinámicas y permita imaginar formas de resistencia que integren lo pedagógico, lo ético y lo ecológico.
Obsolescencia programada: más que una estrategia industrial
El concepto de obsolescencia programada surgió en el siglo XX, cuando fabricantes comenzaron a diseñar productos con una vida útil limitada para aumentar la frecuencia de compra. En la actualidad, esta práctica no se limita a fallas técnicas predecibles, sino que incluye la obsolescencia percibida: el sentimiento de que un dispositivo “ya no sirve” porque su diseño o software han quedado desactualizados.
Este fenómeno es agravado por la rápida innovación tecnológica, que, en lugar de mejorar la calidad de vida, muchas veces genera ansiedad, presión por mantenerse “actualizado” y dependencia de nuevas versiones. A nivel ambiental, la consecuencia directa es la generación de residuos electrónicos tóxicos, que suelen terminar en vertederos de países del sur global.
La obsolescencia programada no es una consecuencia inevitable del desarrollo tecnológico. Es una estrategia de mercado deliberada. Uno de los primeros casos documentados es el Cartel Phoebus (1924), en el cual los principales fabricantes de bombillas eléctricas —entre ellos Philips, General Electric y Osram— pactaron reducir la vida útil de sus productos a 1.000 horas para aumentar las ventas. Paradójicamente, la bombilla más antigua en funcionamiento, en Livermore (California), lleva encendida desde 1901.
Hoy en día, esta práctica ha evolucionado. Los dispositivos actuales no solo fallan por desgaste físico, sino por obsolescencia de software: aplicaciones que ya no son compatibles, sistemas operativos que dejan de actualizarse o baterías que no se pueden reemplazar fácilmente.
Esta estrategia se apoya en la opacidad: muchos consumidores no saben que sus dispositivos están diseñados para durar menos o ser imposibles de reparar. Desde esta lógica, la sostenibilidad no es rentable y el diseño duradero es considerado una anomalía.
Consumismo digital: una pedagogía del deseo
El consumismo tecnológico es más que una práctica económica: es una pedagogía informal que enseña valores como la inmediatez, la novedad constante y la obsolescencia como norma. Redes sociales, videojuegos y plataformas de streaming refuerzan esta lógica mediante algoritmos que premian el desplazamiento rápido de la atención y la gratificación instantánea.
Desde edades tempranas, los niños y adolescentes aprenden a asociar su valor personal con la posesión de ciertos dispositivos o marcas, lo que genera exclusión digital y presión social. Esta cultura de consumo no surge en el vacío: es el resultado de políticas educativas que muchas veces reproducen el modelo tecnocrático sin una mirada crítica.
Educar para resistir: tres claves pedagógicas
Frente a este panorama, ¿cómo puede la educación convertirse en una herramienta de resistencia frente a la obsolescencia programada y el consumismo digital? Proponemos tres ejes estratégicos:
1. Alfabetización digital crítica
No basta con saber usar dispositivos: es fundamental comprender cómo y por qué están diseñados. Esta alfabetización incluye el análisis de la arquitectura de plataformas, la economía de la atención, y la lógica de actualización constante. Incluir estas reflexiones en la educación media y superior permite formar ciudadanos que no solo consumen tecnología, sino que la entienden, la cuestionan y pueden incidir en su transformación.
2. Pensamiento ecodigital
Educar en ecodigitalidad implica entender la huella ambiental del consumo tecnológico: desde la extracción de minerales hasta el reciclaje de basura electrónica. Proyectos escolares como la reparación colaborativa de dispositivos, talleres de hardware libre o el mapeo de la procedencia de nuestros dispositivos son herramientas efectivas para visibilizar las conexiones entre tecnología, ética y sostenibilidad.
3. Derecho a reparar y soberanía tecnológica
El derecho a reparar es una estrategia concreta de resistencia frente a la obsolescencia programada. Desde la educación técnica y tecnológica, se pueden fomentar habilidades de mantenimiento, reparación y rediseño de dispositivos. Vincular estas prácticas con debates sobre soberanía digital —como el uso de software libre— fortalece la autonomía individual y comunitaria frente a las grandes corporaciones tecnológicas.
Conclusión
La obsolescencia programada y el consumismo tecnológico no son fenómenos inevitables: son construcciones culturales sostenidas por decisiones políticas, económicas y pedagógicas. Resistir desde la educación implica construir nuevas formas de relación con la tecnología, basadas en el cuidado, la reparación, la reflexión crítica y la sostenibilidad.
En lugar de enseñar a adaptarse a una tecnología que envejece cada vez más rápido, la escuela puede ser el lugar donde imaginamos y construimos futuros más lentos, más justos y más duraderos. La transformación no será inmediata, pero cada proyecto educativo crítico, cada taller de reparación, cada conversación sobre software libre es una grieta en el sistema.
