La tierra se está sobrecalentando cada vez más. Según datos de la NASA, la temperatura media es de 1,02 ºC más elevada respecto al período 1950 y 1980. Además del derretimiento de los glaciares y el aumento del nivel del mar, el calentamiento global también provoca otros cambios climáticos, como la desertificación y el aumento de eventos extremos en el 2022 como huracanes, inundaciones e incendios; el cambio climático puede causar daños inconmensurables.
Los científicos coinciden en que estos cambios se atribuyen a las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero provocadas por el hombre, especialmente desde la Revolución Industrial. El principal componente de estos gases es el dióxido de carbono, principalmente del sector energético (que incluye, pero no se limita a la generación de electricidad).
En diciembre de 2015, a raíz de la COP21(the 21st Conference of the Parties) de París, se firmó un acuerdo internacional que fijó la meta de mantener el calentamiento global por debajo de los 2 grados para fines de siglo y, si es posible, limitarlo a 1,5 grados. La COP 26 en Glasgow (Escocia) en noviembre de 2021 confirmó el compromiso de ser neutral en CO2 para 2050.
Para alcanzar este objetivo la herramienta principal es la transición energética, es decir, la transición de un sistema energético basado en combustibles fósiles a un sistema energético bajo o cero carbono basado en energías renovables. Una gran contribución a la descarbonización proviene de la electrificación de los consumos, reemplazando la electricidad producida a partir de fuentes fósiles por la generada por fuentes renovables, que hace que otros sectores como el transporte sean más limpios, y la digitalización de las redes, que aumenta la eficiencia energética, contribuyen enormemente a la descarbonización.
¿Es la transición energética algo coyuntural?
El proceso de transición energética no es nada nuevo en la historia. También hemos visto otros cambios históricos importantes en el pasado, como pasar de la madera al carbón en el siglo XIX y del carbón al petróleo en el siglo XX. Frente a las anteriores, esta transición energética viene marcada por la necesidad de proteger al planeta de las amenazas más graves a las que nos hemos enfrentado hasta la fecha, y debemos hacerlo cuanto antes.
Este impulso ha acelerado el cambio en el sector energético, durante una década (2010-2019), el precio de las tecnologías renovables para la energía solar y eólica terrestre ha caído un 80 % y un 60 %, respectivamente. Sin embargo, la transición energética no se limita al cierre paulatino de las centrales térmicas de carbón y al desarrollo de energías limpias, sino a un cambio de paradigma para todo el sistema. Una gran contribución a la descarbonización es la llegada de la electrificación y la digitalización de las redes que aumenta la eficiencia energética y hace posible que hayan sectores, como el transporte, utilizando energías más limpias. Con todo lo anterior no solo se beneficia el medio ambiente, sino también la economía y la sociedad.
Hablando un poco de la digitalización de las redes, es necesario destacar que estas habilitan redes inteligentes y abren el camino para nuevos servicios para los consumidores, desde una perspectiva ambiental, las energías renovables y los vehículos eléctricos pueden reducir la contaminación, mientras que las centrales eléctricas de carbón pueden transformarse en una perspectiva de economía circular. También en términos de sostenibilidad social, los nuevos empleos podrán absorber las labores de aquellas personas que han estado en la industria termoeléctrica hasta ahora. Es importante que la transición energética sea inclusiva y que nadie se quede atrás.
¿Qué beneficios sociales y económicos traerá la transición energética?
La transición energética juega un papel muy importante tanto para nuestra salud como para el medio ambiente. Optar por utilizar energías renovables mejorará la calidad del aire, ya que actualmente la contaminación es la causa de muchas enfermedades respiratorias, cáncer de pulmón o accidentes cerebrovasculares. Asimismo,la transición energética puede ayudar a hacer un mundo más justo. No depender de las superpotencias energéticas haría que los países fueran más independientes y reduciría la tensión de comprar y vender energía. Finalmente, también proporcionará una mayor seguridad para el planeta al no ser necesaria la energía nuclear. Aunque este se considera uno de los más limpios, en caso de accidente puede tener consecuencias muy graves, como el incidente de Chernobyl.
Transición energética: 4 casos de éxito
En este punto vamos a destacar cuatro casos, dos empresas, una ciudad y un país, los cuales han optado por implementar la transición energética.
Empresas con una transición energética exitosa.

Una ciudad con una transición energética exitosa.
La ciudad de Valencia, España, ha creado la Oficina Verde, la cual es una iniciativa del Ayuntamiento de Valencia para luchar contra la pobreza energética. Todo comenzó a mediados de la década de 1980 con el establecimiento de una planta cooperativa para la producción de biodiesel a partir de aceite de colza.
En 2004, se puso en marcha una «central eléctrica ecológica» con biogás alimentado a partir de estiércol. Y en 2010, se puso en marcha una planta de energía solar para la participación de la población. Además, la legislación austriaca vigente fomenta la autoproducción de esta energía.
Colombia, un ejemplo regional de transición energética
Colombia ha recibido dos importantes reconocimientos internacionales por su compromiso con una transición energética. Por un lado, la Organización de las Naciones Unidas (ONU) ha elegido a Colombia como uno de los siete países para liderar el Diálogo Global de Transición Energética en los eventos del Diálogo Energético de Alto Nivel que se realizó en la Asamblea General de la ONU en septiembre del 2021. Por otra parte, en la Asamblea General de la Agencia Internacional de Energías Renovables (IRENA),Colombia fue elegida como miembro principal del Consejo en representación de América Latina. A estos dos hitos se suma que, según el Índice de Transición Energética 2020 del Foro Económico Mundial, Colombia es el país de América Latina y el Caribe que más avanza en esta área.
Una de las iniciativas de Colombia frente a la transición energética es el uso de nuevas tecnologías y de fuentes energéticas, donde el gobierno colombiano y el Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo han unido esfuerzos para implementar proyectos e investigaciones sobre algunos de los temas más importantes de la transición energética. Se destacan el diseño y la ejecución de dos subastas de contratos a largo plazo en 2019, a través de las cuales se buscó asegurar la contratación y, por ende, el flujo de ingresos, a los proyectos de generación de energía renovable.
La llegada de estas nuevas tecnologías de próxima generación a los sistemas de Colombia plantea un desafío para la confiabilidad del sistema de energía. Actualmente se está evaluando la complementariedad del recurso eólico en la zona norte del país, tomando en cuenta la infraestructura de transmisión existente. Además de promover activamente la adopción de soluciones de generación de energía solar y eólica, también se están considerando otras fuentes de energía renovable, como la energía geotérmica.
En los últimos años se han elaborado evaluaciones del potencial geotérmico y se han introducido recomendaciones legislativas para facilitar su adopción. También se está realizando un análisis para consolidar la estrategia nacional de hidrógeno de Colombia, que será el primer paso hacia la masificación y uso de esta opción energética en el país.
Conclusión
Una transición energética es posible y deseable, y Colombia puede ser líder y facilitador de esta transición. Sin embargo, para aprovechar las oportunidades que tenemos, necesitamos una política sólida, transversal y de largo plazo, coordinada con otros países. Impulsar de manera efectiva nuestras políticas para descarbonizar, reducir las emisiones atmosféricas, innovar y utilizar la energía para el desarrollo sostenible; pero también hacerlo de manera accesible, en sintonía con los avances tecnológicos y económicos,movilizando recursos públicos y privados de la manera más adecuada y ayudando a la transición de los grupos afectados negativamente por la transición.
